“President Donald Trump said on Saturday he was putting Venezuela under temporary American control after the United States captured President Nicolas Maduro in an audacious raid and whisked him to New York to face drug-trafficking charges … “‘We will run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,’ Trump said during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. ‘We can't take a chance that someone else takes over Venezuela who doesn't have the interests of Venezuelans in mind.’ Trump said as part of the takeover, major U.S. oil companies would move into Venezuela, which has the world's largest oil reserves, and refurbish badly degraded oil infrastructure.” Reuters Read our full newsletter here
The left criticizes the operation, and argues that it was illegal: “ So what is the plan, if any, for the ‘day after’ Maduro’s downfall? To leave the Maduro regime in place with a new and more compliant leader?” “Mr. Trump appears to have come clean… It was essentially about the oil all along ” “Maduro’s arrest is being compared to the 1989 invasion of Panama… [yet] The United States and Venezuela have no canal treaty ” “Whatever one thinks of Venezuela’s president — and there are many valid criticisms — the far more consequential question raised is this: Who decides when the United States goes to war, and under what authority? ”
The right praises the operation, and argues that it was similar to previous military actions: “It’s a good thing that Maduro has departed Caracas; he wrecked his country, stole elections, facilitated the drug trade , [and] flooded the hemisphere with millions of refugees” “[Trump’s] intervention in Venezuela is the latest step in his gradual revival of the Monroe Doctrine ” “From Jefferson’s naval expeditions to Lincoln’s conduct of the Civil War, from Truman’s Korea to the long struggles of the Cold War, presidents have acted with dispatch [to] protect the nation ” “The United States should be backing Venezuela’s democratic parties ”

“It seems that the issue should not be that Trump and the US invaded a sovereign nation. Trump and the US captured a rogue dictator already under indictment since 2020 for drug trafficking in conspiracy with FARC. Maduro has proven to be the illegitimate leader of a sovereign nation, having "rigged" at least two previous elections, with substantive evidence that he lost. Now, it seems the issue is whether China decides that this allows them to invade Taiwan or Russia declares that their intent is to depose Zelensky using similar substantive reasoning, whatever they decide that that may be.”
